You wouldn't believe the difference writing letters can make. Photo journalist Jennifer Latheef of the Maldives was sentenced to 10 years in prison for photographing a peaceful protest. While in prison, guards threatened her with torture and drowning. Her captors even kicked her with steel-toed boots, resulting in a spinal injury. Amnesty International activists from around the world sent letters to the Maldivian authorities calling for Jennifer's release. In August 2006, authorities freed her before she served one year of her 10-year sentence.

In less than a month, on December 10^th, we as a global community will celebrate International Human Rights Day. To mark this day, thousands of people will gather across the United States, and all around the world to participate in Amnesty International's Global Write-A-Thon, December 7-10.

In more than 35 countries, last year's activists wrote over 100,000 letters to political leaders in an unyielding effort to make a difference in the life of someone whose human rights were being violated. This solidarity event allows you to connect with activists across the world. You can share stories of encouragement and exchange words of hope via blogs like this one as well as the Amnesty International blog site.

How To Get Involved:

Everyone can participate. It's easy! Follow the 5 simple steps below:

1. Register for the write-a-thon as an individual or as a group. Watch as your pledges help light up the Amnesty candle.
2. Spread the word! Encourage your friends and family to get involved.
3. Check out the write-a-thon resources online starting the week of November 19th. You'll find everything you need to participate on this site including case sheets, sample letters, a checklist for how to plan an event, and promotional materials. For hard copies, please email us at writeathon@aiusa.org
4. Write and mail lots of letters on Dec. 7-10.
5. Report back: Let us know how many letters were sent.
